Yayoi Kusama Poster

“Yayoi Kusama Poster” 2022. Procreate.

Yayoi Kusama had always been one of my favorite artist growing up; with her vivid colors and shapes, she was always memorable. When tasked to create a poster design for a “guest speaker” of my choosing, I decided Yayoi Kusama would be perfect for me. Something about her that has kept me interested in her as an adult was her struggles with mental health and how she expresses that through art. Visually, I tried to play into her vivid colors, illusionary shapes, and gourd motifs.

Cat Gif

“Cat Gif” 2021. Photoshop.

Making gifs for a beginner is certainly difficult. I was trying to practice making a gif using Photoshop only to animate. I’d love to attempt another gif soon!

911…Meerkats

“911 I Work From Home- Meerkats” 2021. Photoshop.

The New Yorker released a humorous story in 2017 about a 911 phone call between a dispatcher and someone who works from home. The narrative is about the caller going stir-crazy and describing their chaotic day at home. They mention playing guitar, watching YouTube videos about meerkats, and eating many bowls of cereal. I wanted to do color studies for this project and ended up drawing inspiration from my favorite artist Childish Gambino’s music video for “Sober”. The color scheme in that video always struck me with unease and subtle chaos which I thought would be perfect to mirror for this piece.

E-Dawn

“E-Dawn” 2021. Photoshop.

Since high school, I’ve been a K-Pop fan; Pentagon being one of my favorite bands. E-Dawn was my “bias”, or, favorite member of the group. So when I wanted to test out new ways of digital drawing, I used E-Dawn as an inspiration. I wanted to use a crying baby face and a monotone bubbling liquid background to evoke a more distressed emotion from the piece. Drawing with polygons was certainly fun and created an interesting product. It also helped me think about shadows and highlights in a concrete way.

Freshman Friends

“Weed Fairy” 2021. Procreate.

“Lucas ‘n’ Bug Cookin’ in the Stew” 2021. Procreate.

Freshman year of college is full of new friends, memories, and inside jokes. These two pieces depict my closest friends throughout my freshman year at art school.

Bug and Lucas were two friends who would work on music together— a popular saying among Gen Z when referring to making music is “cooking in the Stu”; “stu” being short for studio.

My friend K would sometimes surprise me with marijuana as a gift so I’d always call her “The Weed Fairy”. What she is wearing in the drawing was a custom one-of-a-kind sweatshirt dress made by our friend Lucas which he made for her.

Field Vixen

“Field Vixen” 2020. Procreate.

One of my first digital pieces made on my iPad using Procreate in 2020. Even though it’s a simple doodle, I really enjoy the exploration of textures and brushes.

Illustrator Practice

“Hot ‘n’ Ready” 2019. Illustrator.

“Koi Fish Pond” 2019. Illustrator.

During my high school Digital Illustration Class, we were tasked with creating different vector pieces in Adobe Illustrator. I always have a fondness towards these two illustrations and would love to re-touch them one day.
